Sadiq Khan and Transport for London have today announced that drivers will be forced to pay for crossing the river using the Blackwall Tunnel from next Spring.
On Wednesday 10th July, TfL confirmed that they would be charging all road users to use both the Silvertown and Blackwall tunnels from Spring 2025. This is despite the Blackwall Tunnel being originally built in 1897, and being one of the very few road crossings east of Tower Bridge compared to the many free crossings in central and west London.
There are an estimated 100,000 journeys through the Blackwall Tunnel each day, which are currently free.
The Blackwall Toll is the latest anti-motorist policy being launched by Sadiq Khan and will be in addition to the £12.50 ULEZ daily charge millions of drivers in Greater London and surrounding counties are now facing. For example, these plans could see large van drivers from South East London paying more than £40 per day to work in Central London from next year before they have even paid for fuel or parking.
- £15 Congestion Charge
- £12.50 ULEZ
- £13 peak fares on the Blackwall Tunnel.
Louie French, the Conservative Member of Parliament for Old Bexley and Sidcup, has been leading the fight against Sadiq Khan’s plans for this latest anti-driver charge and against the ULEZ expansion. Louie launched his petition to stop Sadiq Khan tolling the Blackwall Tunnel in October 2023 and has received thousands of signatures, with even more people signing it in recent weeks.
Louie stated, “This is another attack on drivers from the Labour Mayor, coming less than a year after his much-hated ULEZ expansion and deliberately snuck out just after the General Election.
Sadiq Khan was only in Downing Street yesterday and Labour are already going after hardworking motorists.
My constituents and people across Bexley and Bromley were clear in May when they overwhelmingly rejected Sadiq Khan and his anti-motorist agenda.
We must not let him get away with it and it will only be a matter of time before Labour try to further restrict the freedom of driving through higher taxes”.
