A new pedestrian crossing on Hurst Road was installed outside Old Bexley C of E Primary School this summer after a long campaign by parents, teachers and residents.
Louie French MP, working with local councillors Kurtis Christoforides and Cameron Smith, secured funding for the much-needed road safety scheme. It is one of four places Bexley Council has agreed to install a pedestrian crossing across the borough.
The project involved a two-stage zebra crossing with a pedestrian refuge island in the middle of the road, new high-friction (anti-slip) surfacing, tactile paving, new signage, and new road markings. It means pupils, parents, and residents will have a permanent, safe place to cross Hurst Road, which can often be busy and fast.
Louie French MP met Old Bexley's Head Teacher and pupils this week to celebrate the new crossing installed in time for the new school year.
He said: "I'm delighted that pupils already feel safer crossing the road thanks to the new crossing. This is a huge win for the many parents, teachers and residents who long campaigned for a safe place to cross Hurst Road.
"I'm pleased that, together with local councillors, we secured the funding. It is one of the many projects we're working on in Bexley Village and North Cray to improve road safety locally.”
