Louie French, Member of Parliament for Old Bexley and Sidcup, has joined local Councillors and residents in strongly opposing Greenwich Council’s plans to restrict and charge for parking on non-residential roads in the Greenwich Borough.
The move by the Labour run Council, which was successfully blocked by Bexley Council previously, would very likely see parking displaced from the Greenwich side of Falconwood Station on to residential roads in Bexley, particularly in Falconwood, Welling, East Wickham and Blackfen.
The plans would see time limited parking restrictions introduced, with additional parking charges introduced to target commuters for the station and visitors to Oxleas Woods.
Louie has encouraged residents to submit their views to the consultation before the 24 August via email to [email protected]
Commenting, Louie said:
“The Royal Borough of Greenwich’s plans to restrict parking on non-residential roads near Falconwood Station will undoubtedly have a negative impact on surrounding residential roads in Bexley. I have particular concerns for roads off Welling Way, roads in Blackfen near Boundary Road and Chester Road, and also roads around The Green in Falconwood.
For years, Conservative Councillors in Bexley and Eltham have worked together to prevent Greenwich Council from introducing these restrictions because of the expected impact on residential roads nearby. Sadly, with fewer Conservative Councillors now on Greenwich Council, it appears that the Council believes it can push these plans through. It is telling that Greenwich Council have only advertised these plans in a limited way, with many local residents who will be directly impacted unlikely to be aware of the proposals.
However, we will do all we can to oppose these plans, as I have done for many years as a former Councillor in Falconwood and Welling. With the support of local residents we managed to stop (for now) Greenwich Council's large development at Falconwood Station in recent months. I would encourage all local residents to submit their views to Greenwich Council ahead of the deadline on the 24 August".
