Louie French MP warned some Londoners would face driving charges of up to £40 a day after Sadiq Khan announced he would impose a toll on the Blackwall Tunnel on the 7th of April 2025.
Drivers using the tunnel must pay £4 per crossing at peak times, while van drivers will be charged £6.50 under Labour's plans. The toll will impact over 100,000 drivers who use the crossing every day. It follows Sadiq Khan's decisions to expand the Ulez charge across Greater London and hike the daily Congestion Charge to £15.
Old Bexley and Sidcup MP Louie French said: "In addition to the mayor’s expansion of the Ulez zone and the increased charges for the congestion charge, this new toll could see drivers having to pay around £35 to £40 each day just to get to work – that is before we consider the impact of fuel costs or parking charges in the capital.
"This is deeply unfair on hard-working drivers across the capital – the likes of small business owners or those that need to see friends and family on either side of the river."
