The new Labour government has been forced to let Parliament vote on its plan to cut winter fuel payments for more than 10 million pensioners following a campaign by Conservative MPs, including Louie French.
The vote in Parliament next Tuesday will decide if Labour's "heartless" plan to remove fuel payments from pensioners this winter goes ahead. Louie French MP was one of the Conservative MPs who signed a motion demanding a vote after the Government attempted to avoid one.
Unless Labour drops its plan, over 16,000 pensioners across Old Bexley and Sidcup could lose up to £300 of support for heating costs this winter. This comes as the energy price cap increases by 10% — breaking Labour's pledge to cut energy bills — costing the typical household over £1,700 a year to stay warm and keep the lights on.
Louie French MP said: "Labour's plan to end winter fuel payments for millions is heartless and reckless, and I'm proud to have helped secure a vote to stop it.
"It's disgraceful that Labour has chosen to bankroll unaffordable pay rises for their trade union supporters while taking away crucial support for pensioners.
"I'm on the side of pensioners, who worked hard all their lives and have a right to security in retirement. Labour must ditch their plan."
